Building Blocks of Childhood Memories

By | source:Shutterfly Jul 1st, 2015

Whether your child is just starting kindergarten, or nervously entering their first day of high school, you will want to capture the memories. Yearbooks are the easiest and most effective way to do this, but most parents don’t consider making them at home. Yearbooks are readily available at school, but lack the personal touch that make them more meaningful. Homemade yearbooks will take you on multiple trips down memory lane for years to come.

You’ll need plenty of creativity when working with your child to create a DIY yearbook. Paints, colored pencils, crayons, scissors, and glue sticks are just a few tools to have on hand at all times. There is no right or wrong way to format the book, and the best outcomes are always derived from spontaneity. Pictures can be placed sideways or straight, and don’t be afraid to use fun borders and bright colors.

Another tip for making a great DIY yearbook is to include multiple pictures of friends, in addition to images of your child. Also, try to add pictures from field trips and fun times together. Photos of the classroom and other areas within the school also make exciting additions for the book.

In order to gather more than enough material, plan ahead of time (perhaps at the beginning of the school year) and start taking extra pictures of teachers and places within the school. Instead of asking everyone to pose and “say cheese”, capture them in action, as this makes the images appear more natural. Inform teachers and administrators that your child will be snapping pictures, and ask their permission to be included in your child’s yearbook. If your student is young, you may have to do the picture snapping for them.

Creating a yearbook is an exciting activity, and a great way to capture the moments that mean the most to you and your child. Remember to be creative, and there are no rules to follow. As long as you’re having fun and the book contains all of the memories that you want to add, you should consider your DIY yearbook a complete success.
