Everything You Should Know About D-Day

By | source:Here Jun 6th, 2020

Operation Overlord—better known as D-Day—was the largest amphibious invasion in military history. Originally planned to take place on May 1st, it was delayed until June 5th before then also being postponed to the day now forever marked in history: June 6th, 1944. On this day, the combined Allied forces of the United States, Great Britain, and Canada disembarked on the beaches of Normandy, France, to strike the first major blow to the Axis’ occupation of Europe.

The beachhead assault (Operation Neptune) on Normandy is one of the most recognizable battles of World War II, especially after its depiction in the 1998 film Saving Private Ryan and in other media. However, the battle had several other operations that contributed to its success. There were also a sizeable amount of airborne deployments (now famous thanks to the TV series Band of Brothers), as well as Operation Bodyguard, which consisted of several decoy operations before and after the assault. These operations were able to successfully obscure the Allied invasion plans from the German High Command, helping Allied forces.

It would be impossible for an infographic to hold every small detail, but this one does have a staggering amount of information based on the total numbers of troops, vehicles, supplies, and much more.
