When you think of 2021 the first thing that comes to mind is probably the Covid pandemic and the extreme political division in the country. Those two themes are heavily represented by the data, along with some other worldwide political stories.

The biggest density of news coverage took place towards the end of the year as the new Omicron variant became a global concern. It was just about the only news story covered for the last few weeks of the calendar year.

Also heavily populating the list is a number of global incidents such as airstrikes, bombings, and the big story about the US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan which had some knock on consequences that made headlines.
