The Psychology Of Color In Film

What’s your favorite color––and why? The first question is easy to answer, but the second may be a bit harder.

Believe it or not, there’s a reason we’re attracted to certain colors. We’ve previously discussed how top brands use colors to their advantage, but how does this affect the entertainment industry?

Every color in the rainbow makes us think of different emotions, even though it’s often subconscious. This infographic from Studio Binder examines movies from Mean Girls to Avatar to investigate how colors are used in cinema.

Red is obviously associated with love and passion, but did you know it’s also used to represent power? Additionally, you’re likely aware that pink is a color used to denote feminine qualities, but it’s also used to show empathy, playfulness, and innocence.

Some of these colors, like yellow or orange, may not bring to mind any qualities or emotions at first thought. But once you look at the movies examined, it starts to make sense. Yellow is often used to show naivety and madness, while orange is utilized to remind your mind of youth and sociability.

The next time you go to the movies, try examining the hues on-screen. You may be surprised at what you notice.
